Bamboo carvings functioned as display objects on literati’s desks in their study, reflecting their refined feelings, aesthetic tastes, morality, and thoughts. This is one of the most important collections of bamboo carving in the country, both in quality and quantity.

朱鹤,字子鸣,号松邻,明嘉靖至万历初年江苏嘉定人。首创以高浮雕兼透雕深刻技法刻竹,为“嘉定派”竹刻开山始祖。
此件弥勒与五童子雕刻形神殊异,意态生动,传神入化,为目前仅见之朱松邻圆雕作品。

秦秉年先生捐赠
施天章(1701-1774),字焕文,江苏嘉定人,封锡禄弟子。擅刻竹根人物,兼工牙雕,为雍正、乾隆初朝宫廷御匠,流传作品极少。
此器为施天章竹刻佳作。上落名款,甚是罕见。人物雕刻生动入微,“神采如生,意度具足”;衣纹流畅飘逸,势如飞动。东方朔为清早中期竹刻常见之题材,具喜庆、吉祥、长寿之意。

庄绶纶,字印若,清乾隆、嘉庆年间江苏嘉定人。刻竹擅镌美人仕女,所作仕女,皆得周昉、仇英粉本之妙。
此器以深浮雕兼透雕技法,奏刀精湛娴熟,人物刻划栩栩如生;镂空疏密有致,空灵剔透,极富层次感与立体感。

吴之璠,字鲁珍,号东海道人,清康熙年间江苏嘉定人。精绘事,工构图,善书法,刻竹师法朱氏,创“薄地阳文”技法,被誉为三松后嘉定派刻竹之第一高手。
此件为吴氏“薄地阳文”之典型器物。图中鳞皴瘿节的松皮,叠映交错、瘦劲横斜的松枝及层次丰富的润泽竹肌与竹丝清晰的朴质素地等,均显示出吴氏鲜明的艺术风格特征。

于蒨,字季銮,晚号“禅学道人”,明万历年间江苏金坛人。工山水,善行楷,长篆刻。
此臂搁山水亭阁人物俨然,青韵五色,浓淡相宜,层次分明,为目前我国存世留青竹刻作品中年代最早者。
